1st UNIFI Workshop at IEEE ICCE 2012

The first UNIFI – UNIversities for Future Internet – Workshop took place on the occasion of the 4th ICCE Conference in Hue, Vietnam, August 03, 2012.
Born as an initiative of the Chair of Next Generation Networks (AV) at the Technische Universität Berlin and supported initially by the German Academic Exchange Agency DAAD, UNIFI aims at building sustainable teaching and research infrastructures in the areas of Future Internet through global collaboration among academic institutions.
The 1st UNIFI Workshop gathered around 30 participants representing main stakeholders of academia from Asia, Europe, Africa, South and North America.
The workshop was opened by the invited talk given by Prof. Dr. Thomas Magedanz from the Technische Universität Berlin, Germany. The talk gave a comprehensive overview of the main global technological areas and research directions related to the Next Generation
Networks and Future Internet and presented the technical infrastructures and R&D agenda
of his chair at the Technische Universität Berlin and at his department in the Fraunhofer
FOKUS Institute. The talk concluded with the identification of the Smart Cities as an area of high priority for most countries and as a challenging application domain for the integration of advanced Future Internet technologies.
Professor Serge Fdida from the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) in Paris, France, addressed in his presentation the role of innovation in education in face of the challenges raised by the Future Internet. He argumented for the introduction of a broader scope didactical approach in form of an Internet Sciences domain, gathering together technical and humanity / societal sciences. He also stressed the importance of experimental-driven didactical and research approaches as a complement to the pure theoretical ones. After overviewing main European academic collaborative activities, Prof. Fdida concluded his presentation by underlining the need for a concertated global collaborative effort among academic institutions active in the areas of the Future Internet.
The workshop continued with presentations of the educational and research activities,
achievements and future plans of the:

– Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand – Prof. Chaodit Aswakul
– Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hanoi, Vietnam – Prof. Nguyen HuuThanh
– Hi Chi Minh City University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam – Dr. Nam Thoai
– University of Wurzburg, Germany – Prof. Phuoc Tran-Gia

The closing presentation was given by Dr. Stefan Covaci, Technische Universität Berlin. As project manager of the DAAD-NGNI+FIT project, he gave an overview of the objectives and approaches of the project towards the creation of sustainable educational, experimental and human resources in developing countries from the southern hemisphere. He stressed the importance of continuing the Future Internet evolution from the Internet of Services and Internet of Things towards a Future Internet of People based on resource pooling and elastic, on-demand provisioning principles characteristic to the Future Internet systems.
The presentations raised vivid discussions between the presenters and the audience. The
discussions raised also a number of issues that require further action:
– Extension of the UNIFI community to include further academic institutions from the
southern hemisphere (e.g. Prof. Pawlikowski from the University of Canterbury, New
Zeeland ; Universities from Australia)
– Extension of the UNIFI community to include further academic institutions from the
African developing countries (e.g. Prof. Paul Kuehn from the University of Cairo,
Egypt)
– Positioning of the UNIFI Workshop in further prominent international conferences.

The chairs, Dr. Stefan Covaci and Prof. Serge Fdida, closed the workshop by addressing
their thanks to all presenters, participants and to the local organizers of ICCE 2012 for their excellent logistic services.
